The Academy Award noms are in and Guillermo Del Toro will henceforth be known as “Oscar® nominated del Toro” in the halls of Comic-con. PAN’S LABYRINTH received six nominations, including Foreign Language Film, Original Screenplay, Art Direction, Score, Cinematography and Make-Up.
SUPERMAN RETURNS received a nomination for Visual Effects, along with PIRATES 2 and POSEIDON. PIRATES got a bunch of those weird sound editing noms, as well as Art Direction.
Animated nominees included CARS, HAPPY FEET and a randomly selected third film, this time MONSTER HOUSE.
AND of course, the category you have all been waiting for, the TIE BREAKER category…ANIMATED SHORT FEATURE!

In other notes, we were happy to see Al Gore, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Gosling, Eddie Murphy and Abigail Breslin get their noms, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t let Clint beat Marty again. Please. It’s getting old.
“Lifted” wins. That gives Pixar consolation after losing to “Happy Feet.”
I didn’t get a chance to see “Cars” or “Happy Feet” yet, but I will say that “Monster House” was really fun and a great alternative to goofy animal pics. And, it was co-written by former comics guy Rob “Scud the Disposable Assassin” Schrab. So that’s who I’ll be rooting for.
“Little Mach Girl” should win. Its rather beautiful and heartwarming.
While I’m a big Scorsese fan I’d have to give to Clint again this year.
The Departed (over rated, over long and one of the dumbest endings I’ve ever seen!)
was one of Marty’s weakest films and it would be disappointing for him finally getting the Oscar for that.
RJM, do you not follow the Academy history? That is their total modus operandi — give a lifetime achievement award for a second rate work after having snubbed time-tested classics that change the history of film.
I just didn’t think MILLION DOLLAR BABY was all that, to be honest. And for Clint, great as he is, to have THREE BEST DIRECTOR OSCARS and Scorsese ZERO shows how ludicrous the whole thing is.
Blargh. Nah, Cars is bound to win. Beautiful animation, sincere emotions and John Lasseter. This one’s a shoo-in.
The oddest matter was Borat being nominated for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’. Truly Charles and Cohen deserve some kind of Oscar, and the jokes are brilliant… but screenplay…ADAPTED screenplay at that… wierd…
Little Match Girl is fantastic. I was impressed at how a brutally depressing Hans Christian Andersen story was made into something that was actually cathartic.
(HCA was quite a one-man theatre of horror and despair.)
